PPG Awareness Week took place 19 – 24 June 2017

The aim is to promote the role and benefits of PPGs to patients, the public and health professionals.

Summer Shows 2017

A number of local summer shows have been attended this year, taking the Public Health ‘One You’ campaign out and about. Our stall had details of various sites supporting people to make lifestyle changes, as well as promotional material with the One You, Principia MCP and PartnersHealth logos which included, water bottles helping keep people hydrated, frisbee’s helping people to keep moving and magnetic notepads to help keep reminders close at hand.

The shows were supported by the local Patient Participation Groups, for which we are grateful.

We shall be at Lark in the Park on 2 August and Sunday Funday on 10 September, so come along and say ‘Hello’.

Leaders in health and care in our city and county have put together a plan which they believe can make the biggest impact on improving services and improving the health and wellbeing of the people.

One of the main areas for the plan is to promote wellbeing, prevention, independence and self-care.

Healthwatch Nottingham and Healthwatch Nottinghamshire want you to let them know what influences your own health and wellbeing.

The Transport Team at Rushcliffe Community Voluntary Service are collecting free donations for Rushcliffe & Gedling Voluntary Transport every time you buy anything online with the UK’s leading online fundraising service, easyfundraising.

Funds raised for Rushcliffe and Gedling Voluntary Transport will help volunteer drivers to continue to help older and vulnerable people to get out and about to do the things that many of us take for granted - visiting friends, shopping, getting to the Doctors, taking part in the community and maintaining independence.

With over 3,200 shops and sites on board including Amazon, eBay, John Lewis, Sainsbury’s, Virgin Trains and Aviva, you can get donations on everything from your weekly shop to your annual holiday and it doesn't cost a penny extra!

Plus, if you join and support Rushcliffe & Gedling Voluntary Transport they will get an extra 50p when you raise your first donation.

It's really simple, all you have to do is:

Radford Care Group - Information Programme dates 2017 /18

Information programmes for carers of people with dementia.

The free programme consists of seven, two hour weekly sessions, covering a different aspect of dementia at each session. The groups are facilitated by specialists in dementia group work and will consist of about 12 carers.  Help with respite services and transport may be available. The carers are asked to contribute £2.50 per session towards refreshments.

An event for Nottinghamshire Deaf Communities "Emergency 999/111?"

The event focuses on access to emergency services for the deaf community, who to contact and when.

Health for Teens Website

The Health for Teens website, developed by Nottinghamshire County Council Public Health in partnership with Notts NHS Healthcare Trust, is now available for young people to access support for their emotional and physical health and wellbeing. 

The website links young people to appropriate local health and wellbeing services, and supports young people to manage their health and wellbeing.  It features interactive content, films and quizzes written by experts and includes topics as wide ranging as exam stress to anger management, and from spots to alcohol.

Get Up & Go!

A new campaign has been launched to encourage people to Get Up & Go to help reduce falls across Nottinghamshire.

Falls are the largest cause of emergency hospital admissions for older people in the UK. It has recently been estimated that approximately 30% of people, over 2.5 million, aged 65 and above and about 50% of people, aged 80 and above living at home, will fall at least once a year.

The campaign, which has been launched by the County Council, aims to help reduce this trend by encouraging more people to become active, improving their strength and balance and therefore reducing the likelihood of having a fall.

Here are 10 helpful tips to reduce the risk of having a fall:

  1. exercise regularly – focus on moderate activities, e.g. Gardening, Walking or Tai Chi that challenge your balance and strengthen your legs, aim for 30 minutes a day five times per week.
  2. check your eyes and hearing – go for regular sight tests
  3. look after your feet – wear well-fitted shoes and slippers, and report any foot problems to your GP or chiropodist
  4. review your medication – certain medicines can make you feel faint or affect your balance, if so please contact your GP or pharmacist
  5. get enough vitamin D intake – this is essential for keeping bones strong – the best source is sunshine
  6. eat a diet rich in calcium – to keep your bones strong. Good sources include dairy foods, fortified soya products and canned fish
  7. check your home for hazards – make sure your home is clutter free, well-lit, warm and mop up spillages. Get a free home safety check
  8. contact your GP – if you’ve had a fall or are worried about falling. 
  9. reduce your alcohol consumption and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
  10. keep a torch by your bedside or leave a light on at night in case you need to wake during the night.

Sue Batty, Service Director for Nottinghamshire County Council, said:

“Unfortunately falls are more likely to result in serious injury if someone is older and can significantly reduce people’s ability to live independently. Having a fall is one of the top five reasons that can lead to people leaving their homes because they need a high level of support that can only be provided in a residential care home.

“By making some simple lifestyle changes, people can make a positive difference and reduce their chances of falling.”

There are a wide range of services available across Nottinghamshire including free home hazard assessments and local exercise courses. A Get Up and Go guide has also been produced to showcase six simple exercises to do at home and it also offers a range of safety tips.
