Changes to gluten-free food availability on prescription

Following a three month consultation period, the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups for Rushcliffe, Nottingham North and East and Nottingham West are changing their policy in relation to the availability of gluten-free food on prescription.

We received more than one thousand responses to our consultation and would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views - click here to read the consultation report.

After collating feedback from the consultation, and listening to the recommendations of the clinical, patient and governing bodies of the CCGs, the gluten-free food allowance on prescription will be as follows:

Four units in total of long life bread and/or flour each month on prescription for patients with a diagnosed condition of coeliac disease or dermatitis herpetiformis.

Affected patients have been sent a letter to inform them of the changes to their prescriptions. They have also been sent a frequently asked questions document and suggested list of available products on prescription.

If patients would like to discuss this further, they can contact our Patient Experience Team on 0800 028 3693 (Option 2) or by email:

A printed copy of the consultation report can also be requested through this team.
